CEDIA HOME TECHNOLOGY EVENT 2010 DOES THE BUSINESS FOR CI INDUSTRY

This year's CEDIA Home Technology Event (training: 14-17 June 2010, exhibition 15-17 June 2010) provided the perfect platform for a high quality audience from the UK's residential CI sector to see a host of cutting-edge technologies, develop new skill-sets and network in a vibrant, new ICC London ExCeL environment.

"We're delighted that the industry turned out in force to support this year's CEDIA Home Technology Event at our fresh ICC London ExCeL home” says Robert Hallam, CEDIA Chairman, Region 1. "Visitors took the opportunity to explore some really exciting innovations, especially as far as 3D and HDMI were concerned. They were also able to take advantage of high quality training provided by CEDIA, Trade Suppliers and independent experts as well as meet and share ideas with the key exhibitors and their industry peers. Stand-outs for me included our 3D demo area which played to packed houses each and every day of the show and the Wired for Technology outreach conference which attracted a sizeable audience of electrical contractors keen to find out what CI is all about”.

"After a challenging 2009, it was clear to me that the industry is back on track and looking forward to the future with greater confidence and optimism. This show remains the single biggest gathering for the industry in the UK and the best annual meeting-place for doing business”.

Over 170 CI brands supported the event which attracted steady, high quality visitor traffic on the Tuesday and Thursday of the show, and brought in spectacular numbers on the middle day. The final attendance totaled 5,195 for the four day event, including a greater proportion of new, first-time visitors than in 2009.

Sponsored by AWE Europe, CSE Custom, Digital Projection and Pulse Marketing, the CEDIA 3D Feature offered visitors a fantastic demonstration of the capabilities of this radical new technology using content from Sky and Blu-Ray 3D. Built to replicate a dedicated home cinema room, this space integrated the latest 3D projector technology and a 4m acoustically transparent screen to provide an immersive experience, described by Sky's Senior Product Development Manager, John Dollin as "the best he had ever seen”.

The Wired for Technology Conference, sponsored by Lutron and developed in partnership with Professional Electrician magazine and the NICEIC, drew more than 80 electrical contractors to the event. Speakers led by CEDIA Outreach Chair, Gary Lewis, and including CEDIA members, Guy Singleton (ImagineThis), Peter Davidson (Access-One) and Malcolm Heskins (Gold System) helped educate the audience on CI business opportunities and inform them of the problems and pitfalls that await those who fail to invest properly to understand the sector or skill up for the challenge.

CEDIA Home Technology Event exhibitors showcased everything from hi-end speakers, amplifiers, receivers, players, home cinema projectors, whole-home audio systems, plasma, LCD and 3D screens to audio and video media servers, HVAC control, lighting control systems and automated mechanisms for lifting plasmas and other devices from beneath beds and garden decking. Also on display were security control products, audio and video cabling, switching, and distribution systems, touch-screens, apps, controllers, furniture and even an automated bath-filling system. In a show-floor demonstrating especially intelligent and creative use of space, CSE Custom and TDI Group triumphed as Best Stand at Expo and Best Shell Scheme Stand, respectively as part of the annual CEDIA Awards scheme.

An issues-led Show Floor Seminar Theatre programme proved another attraction. Headlined by interior designer Oliver Heath of TV's Dream Homes show, the schedule also saw high level presentations from experts at BSkyB, the BBC, the Smart Metering Association and John Cullen Lighting amongst others. The industry's own Steve Moore and Mike Heiss were also on hand to give their own unique take on what was-not-to-be-missed at the show.

Alongside the Wired for Technology education offering, CEDIA also ran three further Outreach conferences at the event, attracting more than 100 additional visitors from mechanical and electrical, interior design and architectural backgrounds. During the show CEDIA confirmed its commitment to build on these initiatives with more outreach events in the year ahead.

In total, the CEDIA education programme provided over 100 hours of quality training for delegates on and off the show floor. This content included a new series of Business and Marketing courses, plus a range of specialist technical sessions, workshops and popular round tables on HDMI, the iPad and 3D. The programme was supplemented by a substantial amount of free training courses provided by Trade Suppliers at the event.

Away from the show floor the usual mix of networking and fun once again proved to be a winning formula with the Habitech sponsored industry drinks reception offering some well-deserved R&R to exhibitors on the opening night. Over 300 attended the informal get together which was held in the Zero Sette bar and restaurant.

The CEDIA Home Technology Event will return to ICC London ExCeL next year (training: 20-23 June 2010, exhibition 21-23 June 2011). For further information on the event, visit www.hometechnologyevent.co.uk

Exploring the latest light sources, she will demonstrate how to meet the regulations whilst retaining mood and atmosphere throughout the house and garden. And, the current business performance of the technical durables market will be the topic of discussion when Nigel Catlow, Business Group Director for Consumer Electronics at GfK takes to the floor. He will be giving invaluable insight into the market, its latest developments and formats, such as LED and Blu Ray and the latest position of cross category features, such as HD and audio docking.

The Show Floor Seminar Theatre will also play host to some of the industry's own experts, who will be on hand to give their unique insight into the technologies that will shape the future of residential custom installation. The legendary Michael Heiss will return with Steve Moore to present a fast-paced run-through of the brand new products and technologies you should look out for at the show, as part of their Pre Game Show feature. The inimitable duo will also return, on the last day of the show, with a Post Game Show retrospective analysis of the trends and technologies that have defined the event.

Further details of the Show Floor Seminar Theatre programme can be found within the Seminar Guide which is now available, on request, from the CEDIA Office or downloadable from the website, www.hometechnologyevent.co.uk.
SEMINAR GUIDE OUT NOW!

With games outselling music and films combined in the high street, gaming is big business; Designing Integrated Gaming Rooms shows how, when properly integrated, a games room can help keep you, quite literally, ahead of the game.Whilst, iPhones, iPads and Tablets will be an open forum to discuss the impact of these emerging devices and there will be additional round-table discussions on topics such as Distributing HDMI, 3D TV and Cloud Media and Content Aggregation.

In addition to the CEDIA courses, there will also be training opportunities from the likes of The British Audio-Visual Dealers Association (BADA) and KNX as well as a wide range of Trade Supplier Product training sessions. And, away from the seminar room, the Show Floor Seminar Theatre returns with its informal and up-tempo topical agenda. This year, HDMI, 3D, smart meters, interior design and the digital future are some of the issues that will come under close scrutiny as part of this ever-popular forum. The line-up of expert speakers will feature involvement from major corporates, such as, BSkyB, and the BBC who will give audiences the broadcaster's perspective on HD and 3D content delivery into the home. At the same time, visitors will be able to find out more about relevant issues, including new technologies, HDMI and smart metering. Designer, writer and television presenter, Oliver Heath will also be taking centre stage as part of the Show Floor Seminar Theatre on Wednesday 16th June for a keynote address on the issues of design and sustainability.

Full details of all the courses on offer, plus details of the dedicated events for Interior Designers, Architects, M&E Consultants and Electrical Contractors can be found in the Seminar Guide which is available, on request, from the CEDIA Office or downloadable from the CEDIA website.
HOME TECHNOLOGY EVENT TO HOST CONFERENCE FOR ARCHITECTS

CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) is to host its first-ever "Designing Integrated Future Ready Homes” conference at this year's Home Technology Event (training: 14-17 June 2010, exhibition 15-17 June 2010, ICC London ExCeL). Supported by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), the conference will provide training for architects and design professionals who want to learn more about residential custom installation and the benefits it can bring to their projects.

The free half day conference at the Home Technology Event will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 16th June at the ExCeL London venue, giving architects access to a tailored education programme. CEDIA is offering two courses at the event which will explain the benefits of including smart home technology in residential projects. Attendees will participate in the RIBA CPD course, "Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes”, followed by CEDIA's latest RIBA accredited, advanced CPD offering, "Using Technology to Manage Energy in the Home”.

The generic "Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes” CPD course outlines the benefits and process involved in residential custom installation and the advantages of using a CEDIA member. The aim of the course is to ensure that homes are usefully connected internally and externally to electronic and data services for the foreseeable future, to provide an understanding of the basic techniques and the terminology of custom installation, to reveal what's possible in home electronic design, and to ensure that architects know who to ask when they need help in a particular area.

Whilst, "Using Technology to Manage Energy in the Home”, is an exciting, topical and generic CPD that gives an invaluable insight into how simple technological solutions can make a significant environmental difference by efficiently managing energy in the home, both now and in the future. With the Code for Sustainable Homes having set new standards for energy efficiency and many modern building projects now calling for energy-efficient construction methods and low-energy solutions; the message at the heart of this CPD has never been more relevant.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for architects and design professionals to attend a focused event and learn about how to add value to their projects by working with a custom installer” says Gary Lewis, CEDIA Outreach Chair and Director of Future Systems. "Educating architects about the industry and what our members do is an important role for CEDIA. It allows us to raise awareness of the growing residential electronic systems industry, its technology and the potential benefits for architects and their clients”.

Crestron, the global manufacturer in residential control systems, has announced that it will be taking space at this year's CEDIA Home Technology Event (training: 14-17 June 2010, exhibition 15-17 June 2010, ICC London ExCeL). Other new exhibitors now confirmed for the single biggest event this year for the UK custom installation sector include leading distributors, Genesis Technologies and Marata Vision, alongside control debutants Carlo Gavazzi and Gira.

"The Home Technology Event is the number one shop window for the residential custom installation industry” says Show Manager and CEDIA's Operations Director, Matt Nimmons. "We're delighted to confirm the participation of these new companies and are well set to sell out the remaining floor space in the weeks ahead. Any organisation thinking of taking part, should contact CEDIA now to ensure that they can get the best of the remaining space available”.

These companies join a burgeoning list of major brands appearing at the event which includes JVC, Kaleidescape, Lindy, NuVo, Panasonic, Philips, Sonos and Speakercraft. Prominent distributors in the sector will also be on show - AWE Europe, BMB Electronics, CSE Custom, Habitech and Pulse Marketing. Other exhibitors include the likes of Amina, Artcoustic, Draper Group, Extra Vegetables, Fasttel, Future Automation, Premier Mounts, Philips Dynalite, Rako, Sonos, Smart-e and Unique Automation.

"We are delighted to be at the Home Technology Event this year” says Crestron's Petra van Meeuwen. "We will be showing new additions to our hugely popular Digital Media and Lighting Control solutions, but the main focus for the event will be on the new Prodigy range. This simple and affordable solution gives our dealers the opportunity to expand their market to provide home control for every lifestyle and budget”.

"And the buzz in the lighting world is all about LEDs” continues Petra. "We have the products and technology to provide individual control for LED light loads and our systems can work with any LED transformer on the market. We are also expecting to have the first UK showing of a number of innovations including wireless solutions, ideal for the retrofit market and news on our extended offering in keypads and faceplates. Not only that, but we will be running Manufacturer Training as well as revealing the winners in our hotly-contested annual Integration Awards – showcasing the very best installations of Crestron in the residential market. Also we have a number of solutions that are proving extremely popular with architects and interior designers and the special conferences that CEDIA is hosting at the event give us the opportunity for dialogue with this important group. It is all set to be a busy few days in London!”

Exhibitors will be showcasing everything from hi-end speakers, home cinema projectors, whole-home audio systems, plasma, LCD and 3D screens to audio and video media servers, HVAC control, lighting control systems and automated mechanisms for lifting plasmas and other devices. Also on display will be security control products, audio and video cabling, switching, and distribution systems, touch-screens, controllers, furniture and even an automated bath-filling system which can be activated and controlled by an iPhone!

The Home Technology Event also features a comprehensive education and conference programme. This will feature dedicated CEDIA conferences for m&e consultants and contractors, architects, interior designers and electrical contractors. Last year's show provided over 100 hours of quality training for delegates on and off the show floor. This content was supplemented by a substantial amount of free training courses provided by Trade Suppliers at the event. Last year's show featured products from more than 150 brands and an attendance totalling 5,082 over its three day duration.

NICEIC, the electrical contracting industry's independent voluntary body for electrical installation matters throughout the UK, has announced its backing for the "Wired for Technology” conference, organized by CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) in association with Professional Electrician magazine.

"Wired for Technology” will take place at ExCeL London on the morning of Thursday 17th June at this year's Home Technology Event (www.hometechnologyevent.co.uk). It is designed to help electrical contractors find out how they can get involved and profit from the smart homes market and will feature a series of presentations covering opportunities in the sector, including a session led by Tony Cable, Senior Marketing and Events Executive at the NICEIC. The morning will also include a guided tour of the 100+ exhibitors who typically occupy the event's show floor so contractors can familiarise themselves with the key brands and products.

The "Wired for Technology” conference will be a key part of CEDIA's Home Technology Event, the only annual trade show and education event in the UK dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems.

"We're delighted to have the NICEIC support for this conference” says Matt Nimmons, Operations Director at CEDIA. "With their support we can take the message out to the electrical contracting sector where there is a genuine appetite for knowledge about the smart homes industry. This is a fantastic chance for contractors to find out about the opportunities and how they can gear themselves up to succeed within it”.

"NICEIC is delighted that CEDIA has invited Tony Cable to speak at the ‘Wired for Technology' conference at ExCel in June. Tony has been working in the electrical contracting industry for over 50 years and has witnessed first hand a lot of technology changes to the average British house, since he started as an apprentice back in 1957. NICEIC recognise that the ‘smart homes' sector represents an excellent future business opportunity for many NICEIC registered contractors, so is keen to support this event” adds Mark Smith, Marketing Manager, NICEIC.

HOME TECHNOLOGY EVENT HOSTS “DESIGNING INTERIORS WITH TECHNOLOGY” CONFERENCE

Following the huge success of its first education conference dedicated to interior designers at last year's CEDIA Expo, CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) has announced that this year's Home Technology Event will also host training sessions for this important audience under the "Designing Interiors with Technology” banner at the show.

Over 110 design professionals made the trip to ExCeL for the first "Designing Interiors with Technology” conference, with another 50 designers attending the same event when it was held at the Decorex trade show in September.

At the Home Technology Event, the 2010 conference will follow a similar format with revised content to ensure maximum relevance and value to the interior design community.

It will be a free half-day education event aimed at informing designers on the benefits of including smart home technology in residential projects. It will also introduce CEDIA itself and the work of its members. The sessions will be followed by the opportunity for designers to take a guided tour of the show floor where they can meet and discuss technologies face-to-face with exhibitors. Details of the programme will soon be finalised and released together with information on how CEDIA members can get involved to support the conference.

The event will be sponsored by Decorex, idFX and the BIID (British Institute of Interior Design).

"Outreach towards the interior design community is massively important for CEDIA members”, comments Gary Lewis, CEDIA Outreach Chair and Director of Future Systems. "The first conference held at last year's CEDIA Expo proved an excellent achievement in attracting this audience to the show. We are confident that, with a refreshed programme and a re-branded show, we can once again educate designers about our industry and bring them to ExCeL to learn and see our industry at first hand”.

Comments from those who attended the first Designing Interiors With Technology conference.

Jane Ringe Director, Poised to Move

"Thank you CEDIA for a great 'Designing with Technology' conference. I thought it was excellent! The lectures were pitched at exactly the right level and the content was well-balanced and informative. It also gave an invaluable insight into future developments. The guided tours of the exhibit floor were an inspired idea, and myself and members of my group were greatly enthused to see exactly how working with CEDIA members could contribute to a project. Thank you again for such a fantastic day.”

Diego Ivan Correa B.

"Thank you very much it was a wonderful day. The seminars were great and suitably generic and very informative. Thank you very much, your support, it is invaluable.”

Ursula Wesselingh, Ursula Wesselingh Interiors

"First and foremost I think it was a very successful format – to get a number of experts together, each delivering information on different aspects of home technology, in just a single morning and all specifically targeted at interior designers & architects. I also thought the guided tour of the exhibition afterwards was a very successful way to introduce concepts, manufacturers and suppliers. Questions were asked and everyone learnt from it. Also it was really good to get the message drummed home about the importance of working with accredited/recognised professionals (such as CEDIA members) and to work on better relationships between the industries.”

Anouska Anquetil, Associate of BIDA and Interior Design Consultant at Gilt&Gloss Design Ltd

"I found the conference very interesting and insightful. The organisation on the day was excellent.”

Six months ahead of the CEDIA Home Technology Event and exhibitor bookings are gaining momentum, with over 60% of the exhibition space already allocated. With the floor plan reflecting a vibrant mix of both first time participants as well as established exhibitors, the show promises to be every bit the showcase for the industry; remaining the only annual trade event in the UK dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems.

With the decision to refocus the event already paying dividends, the likes of Amina, Artcoustic, AWE Europe, BMB Electronics, Draper, Extra Vegetables, Future Automation, Gira, Habitech, JVC, Kaleidescape, Philips Dynalite, Rako, Sonos and Smart-e Ltd have all shown their commitment to a show which is set to build on the achievements of its predecessor. "CEDIA Expo 2009 exceeded our expectations with regard to both the quantity and quality of the visitors.” Explains BMB Electronics' Marc Waple. "We had a constant flow of interested visitors to our booth which was in a great location. We were very glad to see the event attracting new visitors, like the interior designers and electrical installers. Thanks to the new direction CEDIA has taken for the 2010 show we expect this to be even more successful.”

Paul Cummin, Artcoustic UK agrees "We had a fantastic time at CEDIA Expo last year; it was one of the best shows we have ever done. CEDIA are definitely moving in the right direction with the re-brand, it will help to bring in a wider range of quality visitors which in turn makes for a great trade show experience for exhibitors.”

Behind the scenes, CEDIA is working hard to make the event as compelling, relevant and valuable as possible for the industry. With each show, the Association attracts new exhibitors and visitor audiences and this year will be no exception. In 2009, CEDIA Expo opened up the industry to Design Professionals with the introduction of the phenomenally successful "Designing Interiors with Technology” conference. The re-branded Home Technology Event 2010 will take this even further, with dedicated offerings for building services professionals, consultants and electrical contractors. The ever-popular Show Floor Seminar Theatre will return with an even more compelling programme and there will be innovative feature areas dedicated to both 3D and gaming. Off the show floor, there will be courses to educate and certifications to challenge.

"The CEDIA Home Technology Event gives us a great opportunity to showcase exciting new and existing products to both existing and new customers and we are delighted to be attending once again, as we have done every year since the very first CEDIA UK show.” Adds Ian Severs, CSE Custom.

All in all, the CEDIA Home Technology Event is on track to be one of the most important dates in the UK Residential Custom Installation Industry calendar. The marketing campaign has begun in earnest and the show has a brand new website to reflect its new identity.
CEDIA REBRANDS EXPO IN 2010

After overwhelming support from the industry, CEDIA Expo returns to ExCeL in 2010 but whereas the venue might be the same, the show is distinctly different. A new name and brand new identity are just some of the exciting ways that the event is set to evolve, to ensure that it continues to stay fresh, relevant and as valuable as possible.

Yes, after engaging with the industry, ExCeL may have emerged, once again, as the preferred location but it also became clear that the future success of CEDIA Expo is about more than simply its location. Rebranding the event to broaden its appeal to new custom installation, specifier and design professional audiences is an obvious way for the show to move forward and, to this end, the show will be renamed as "The Home Technology Event 2010 in association with CEDIA”

"One of the challenges we faced was communicating the meaning and relevance of CEDIA Expo to those unfamiliar with the association and what it represents.” Explains CEDIA Chairman, Robert Hallam. "This new name and identity will help broaden the appeal of the custom installation industry and make the event more accessible to new audiences. We are very excited about this latest evolution of the show but also remain committed to ensuring that it continues to provide the key platform in the calendar for education and doing business. It is our responsibility, as the trade association, to create the environment which helps the industry achieve both these objectives.”

But, the show's new name is only part of the story. CEDIA is also moving ahead with plans to build on the considerable successes of recent years. Two of the most popular initiatives of the 2009 event were the Show Floor Seminar Theatre and the "Designing Interiors with Technology” conference.

The Show Floor Theatre recognised the need to provide core educational elements to members outside of a formal classroom setting. These sessions gave crucial updates on technology and the market, free of charge as a valuable asset to the industry and visitors can expect to see an equally compelling programme at The Home Technology Event 2010. Whilst the "Designing Interiors With Technology” conference proved to be one of the most successful aspects of CEDIA Expo 2009. With more than 110 design professionals attending the event and CEDIA will look to offer an enhanced programme again next year.

In addition, CEDIA has plans in place for a half day seminar programme tailored to electrical contractors. Supported by the leading title in the sector, Professional Electrician magazine, and the industry body NICEIC, the "Wired for Technology” conference will provide an important introduction to the industry for contractors. Similar conference style events are in the pipeline for architects and building services consultants and discussions are currently taking place with the key industry associations, RIBA, CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) and CIBSE (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers). CEDIA are also considering the option of a special VIP evening, working with major institutions and banks based in Canary Wharf to attract high net-worth consumers to the event.

With its high quality content and brand new identity, The Home Technology Event 2010 promises to be exciting, redefining and a fantastic vehicle for the future growth and prosperity of the residential custom installation industry as a whole. For further information on The Home Technology Event 2010 which will be held at ExCeL London, 14th to 17th June (training: 14th to 17th June; exhibition: 15th to 17th June), visit www.cedia-expo.com

INDUSTRY SUPPORTS EXCEL LONDON AS THE VENUE FOR CEDIA EXPO 2010

Following a complete 360o review, CEDIA, the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association, has announced that its annual CEDIA Expo training and product showcase event will return to ExCeL London in 2010 15-17 June exhibition; 14-17 June training.

In the review, CEDIA consulted extensively with more than 100 companies and individuals from across the industry. These included exhibitors who had either attended the overwhelmingly successful 2009 CEDIA Expo or previously supported the event. Visitors were also invited to complete a survey to identify where and how the Expo experience could be improved whilst members who do not visit were asked to contribute their feedback and ideas to the debate. ExCeL London emerged as the preferred location for a clear majority of those canvassed in the review. In view of these findings, the CEDIA Board has endorsed the selection of ExCeL London as the venue for the 2010 CEDIA Expo.

Key findings included:

68% of present and past exhibitors wanted the CEDIA Expo to be a single event in one location.

75% of those exhibitors wanted the event to remain at ExCeL London.

63% of CEDIA Expo visitors chose London as the preferred location with 84% of those wanting it to remain at ExCeL London.

79% of exhibitors and 80% of visitors rated CEDIA Expo 2009 as good or excellent.

"This extensive review has confirmed the choice of ExCeL London as the right location for the annual Expo moving forward” says Wendy Griffiths, CEDIA's Executive Director. "Although smaller in size and in spite of the economic climate, the 2009 show proved a huge success. Following this achievement, we have major plans to ensure that the CEDIA Expo continues to stay fresh, relevant and valuable as the premier annual event for the residential custom installation for exhibitors and visitors in 2010 and beyond”.

CEDIA aims to build on the success of new initiatives, such as, the "Designing Interiors With Technology” conference and the showfloor theatre which were well-supported at this year's show. Outline plans include the addition of a half day seminar programme tailored to electrical contractors, plus dedicated conference style events for architects and building services consultants. In another initiative CEDIA is considering the option of a special VIP evening, working with major institutions and banks based in Canary Wharf to attract high net-worth consumers to the event. The CEDIA Board is also exploring the possibility of a re-branding for the event to broaden its appeal to custom installation and design professional audiences. In all its efforts CEDIA is committed to ensuring that the CEDIA Expo remains representative of the industry's needs as a platform for education and doing business.

From modest beginnings in Harrogate in 1996, when just over 300 attended, the 2009 CEDIA Expo attracted 5,082 attendees.

INDUSTRY RALLIES TO SUPPORT CEDIA UK EXPO

The biggest, single market in European residential custom installation has come out strongly in support of an ‘overwhelmingly successful' CEDIA UK Expo 2009 (22-25 June, ExCeL London), says the event's organiser CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association).

"In challenging circumstances, the backing we have received from visitors and exhibitors for this year's CEDIA UK Expo has been, quite simply, incredible” says CEDIA Chairman, Robert Hallam. "The CEDIA Board, office staff and the show's exhibitors have worked tirelessly to make the event as compelling, relevant and valuable as possible for the industry. And, we are delighted that visitors have responded so positively, turning out in force to see the raft of new products and technologies that are here, taking part in CEDIA training and showing their backing for the UK custom installation industry. Those exhibitors that were here have been justly rewarded with an overwhelmingly successful CEDIA Expo, which, in more than a handful of cases, has been their best ever.”

Against the backdrop of a global recession, more than 150 CI brands supported the show with an array of new product launches and benefited hugely from steady, high quality visitor traffic on the Tuesday and Thursday of the show, and a spectacular attendance on the middle day of the event. Attendance for this year's CEDIA Expo totaled 5,082.

Amongst the attractions which had the event buzzing was the popular Show Floor Seminar Theatre. The programme was headlined by Richard Farleigh of Dragon's Den fame, whose engaging and entertaining keynote address drew the crowds on what was already the busiest show day by far. Also attracting standing-room only audiences were experts from BERR (UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform), Cisco Systems, the BBC, the BIDA (the British Interior Design Association) and the BRE (Building Research Establishment). The industry's very own Steve Moore and Mike Heiss were also on hand to give their own unique take on what was-not-to-be-missed at the show.

Another huge hit at CEDIA Expo 2009 was the dedicated CEDIA conference run for design professionals. Sponsored by the BIDA (British Interior Design Association), leading interior design magazine idFX and Decorex, the interior design show for professionals, ‘Designing Interiors with Technology' was a hugely successful outreach event attended by over 110 architects and interior designers. CEDIA Marketing Chair, Jane Scotland, Angus Gibson and Matthew Tillman from Gibson Music, Lucy Martin of John Cullen Lighting and Malcolm Stewart from Kensington Home Technology delivered a programme designed to give a better understanding of the world of the CEDIA professional and to explain how integrated audio, visual, lighting and other systems could be used to enhance interior schemes.

The conference proved to be an invaluable introduction to the technologies that delegates would later see on guided tours of the exhibition. The presence of so many design professionals on the show floor created a tangible buzz and undoubtedly contributed to what was already a standout day. In total, the CEDIA education programme provided over 100 hours of quality training for delegates on and off the show floor. This content was supplemented by a substantial amount of free training courses provided by Trade Suppliers at the event.

"The conference was excellent” says delegate Simon Atkins from Interiors etc. ”I found it very useful, particularly as this is quite a new area for us and we need to get our knowledge up to scratch for clients coming through who want the latest integrated technology. Having the guided tour around the show was also very helpful, as our guide understood our needs as interior designers and was able to relate the products directly to our requirements. Overall, a really good day”.

There were some great new products on show, with a number of exhibitors pulling out all the stops in the quality and creativity of their stand design. Invision UK and PMC were particularly successful in this respect, attracting the attention of David Pegler, ExCeL's Managing Director to win Best Stand at Expo and Best Shell Scheme Stand, respectively in the annual CEDIA Awards. Meanwhile, industry website HiddenWires received a bottle of champagne from CEDIA for bringing in the most amount of visitors on their unique visitor code. The CEDIA Expo also received ‘royal assent' this year as CEDIA Chair, Robert Hallam conducted a Sheikh from the Qatari Royal Family on a specially arranged VIP guided tour of the show on the opening day.

Away from the show floor the usual mix of networking and fun once again proved to be a winning formula with the industry drinks reception offering some well-deserved R&R to exhibitors after Wednesday's busy show. Over 300 attended the informal get together which was held in the Fox@ ExCeL. And, this year CEDIA Expo played host to the very first CEDIA Expo 5-A-Side Charity Football Cup, organised by Essential Install magazine. 16 teams competed, including: Armour, KEF, Invision, Opus, Pulse Marketing, Future Automation, PMC, Design Logistics, SMC, T&T Automation, Imerge, Prestige Audio and Sonos. The evening culminated in a Future Automation vs KEF final, with Future Automation lifting the coveted trophy in a penalty shoot-out. More than 2000 was raised for Essential Install's chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and a good time was had by all!

Electronic systems designers, installers and trade suppliers represented the vast majority of the overall audience, with 40% of visitors taking their first ever trip to CEDIA UK Expo. Boosted by the success of this year's event, CEDIA is consulting with the event's stakeholders on plans for 2010, with details on location and likely format scheduled to be announced shortly.

CEDIA LAUNCHES RECESSION-BUSTING EXPO INITIATIVE

CEDIA has introduced a special "recession-busting" initiative to help custom installation businesses support and prosper from their participation in CEDIA Expo 2009 (ExCeL London, 22nd to 25th June 2009 (training: 22nd to 25th June; exhibition: 23rd to 25th June).

"These are extraordinary times”, explains Matt Nimmons, CEDIA's Operations Director. "In talking with the industry, and as the trade body representing and supporting the sector, CEDIA recognises the challenging economic circumstances, and the unique financial pressures many of our members now face. That said, the industry also tells us that today, more than ever, they want the proven business development, education and networking platform that CEDIA Expo brings. So we have worked closely with our exhibitors and visitors to build extra value into CEDIA Expo 2009. The result is a package which will strengthen the event for all its stakeholders and ensure it continues to serve the residential custom installation sector as the industry's premier technology and education showcase”.

Robin van Meeuwen, MD at Crestron comments: "Crestron has exhibited at CEDIA Expo since it began and we certainly support the Show. It's a great opportunity to do business and to show your latest products as well a great platform to meet up with customers and potential new ones. We are delighted that CEDIA is looking at ways of ensuring an even better return on investment for exhibitors. Those companies that commit to the show and market through these difficult times will, I am sure, be stronger for it. We are proud to be at the forefront of the show floor and are really looking forward to a great event!"

"We're really delighted that CEDIA has listened to the industry's concerns, and taken decisive and positive action to address them” says Jonathan Pengilley of Habitech. "CEDIA Expo 2009 is re-energised and moving forward with renewed energy and purpose. Habitech is very much looking forward to the show which remains, in our view, the essential new product and education event for the industry”.

"The annual CEDIA Expo is central to our sales and marketing strategy” according to Steve Beahan of Invision UK. "It's an ideal opportunity to showcase our latest products and always delivers an excellent return on our investment. We have already enjoyed great success in 2009 despite tough economic conditions and we hope the show will allow us to build on this momentum and meet new customers. I see absolutely no reason why this year's CEDIA show will not be a resounding success for everyone involved"

The package features two key financial incentives. All exhibitors will benefit from a 33% across the board discount on CEDIA Expo stand space at this year's event. Meantime, visitors can take advantage of a "two for the price of one” training session deal which is available to all delegates booking slots on the CEDIA Expo education programme (excluding Certification courses). This initiatives will ensure businesses in the industry generate better value for money than ever before from their investment in CEDIA Expo 2009, helping them to counter the effects of the difficult economic conditions.

As a further boost, the Association is investing in a series of exciting feature attractions and events taking place in and around the show over the coming weeks. More details will be announced shortly.

Already, CEDIA has re-focused Expo education for 2009 to deliver better value for delegates and exhibitors, and confirmed that Richard Farleigh of BBC's Dragon's Den fame will be one of the keynote presenters in the Show Floor seminar Theatre. Other presenters talking here include the Government's Electronic Innovations expert, Richard Foggie from BERR (the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform), alongside senior representatives from the BBC, Cisco, the BRE (Building Research Establishment) and the British Interior Design Association, amongst others.

Last year's CEDIA Expo attracted 7,474 visitors. Electronic systems designers, installers and trade suppliers represented the vast majority of the overall audience, with 40% of visitors taking their first ever trip to CEDIA UK Expo. This attendance also included design professionals from architectural, interior design and property development disciplines, who made up 12% of the audience, and a higher proportion of electrical contractors, comprising a further 7% compared to 3% last year. International visitors representing 48 number countries also attended, making up 15% of the total.

CEDIA EXPO TO HOST INTERIOR DESIGN CONFERENCE

CEDIA Expo, the only annual trade event in the UK dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems, is to host "Designing Interiors with Technology”, a conference for interior designers explaining how they can enhance their interior design schemes with integrated audio, visual, lighting and other technologies. The conference is sponsored the BIDA (British Interior Design Association), leading interior design magazine idFX, and Decorex, the interior design show for professionals.

The conference is a free half day education event at CEDIA Expo taking place on the morning of Wednesday 24th June at the ExCeL London venue. Sessions will feature presentations from Decorex exhibitors Kensington Home Technology, John Cullen Lighting and others. The event will promote the benefits of including smart home technology in residential interior design projects as well as introducing CEDIA itself and the work of its members.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the interior design community to attend a focused event and learn about how to add value to their projects by working with a custom installer” explains Fraser Stride, Outreach Chair on the CEDIA Board. "Delegates will also have the chance to visit the show floor at CEDIA Expo and see the latest products and technologies first hand and talk to the exhibitors about upcoming projects.”

"BIDA is delighted to support this special conference at CEDIA Expo 2009. Attending this event will help designers understand the world of the CEDIA professional better, and recognise the common purpose that we share in creating stunning schemes which meet the lifestyles and aspirations of our clients” explains Iris Dunbar, President of The British Interior Design Association. "The most successful interiors come about from establishing a sound brief and this is exactly the same with electronic installations. Defining and incorporating the brief before beginning the design process, helps to establish a truly great project.”

The conference will provide an introduction to CEDIA and what its members do, explain what interior designers need to know about home cinema rooms and provide a home electronics technology ‘jargon-buster'. The event will also take a look at trends in home electronics technology, issues in lighting control, and what's around the corner that interior designers should be aware of.

The conference will followed by a light lunch and then CEDIA board members will provide guided tours of Expo, providing interior designers with a taste of what the smart home industry can offer them. For those wishing to spend more time talking with exhibitors, the rest of the afternoon will be free to explore stands of a particular interest in greater detail.

CEDIA Expo will take place at ExCeL London from 22nd to 25th June 2009 (training: 22nd to 25th June; exhibition: 23rd to 25th June). Visitors can now sign up to receive their visitor badge for the event by pre-registering at CEDIA Expo's dedicated website, www.cedia-expo.com.

CEDIA Expo2008 attracted nearly 7,500 trade visitors. Now in its 13th year, this must-attend event is important for newcomers into the sector from the electrical, security and building contractor professions. It also provides a valuable insight into the sector, its integrated technologies and lifestyle benefits for housebuilders, architects, interior designers and building services consultants.

WHY EXHIBITIONS WORK – EVEN WHEN THERE’S A RECESSION

Wendy Griffiths, Executive Director of CEDIA, tells is why exhibiting during a recession is actually a good idea and gives us a few handy tips on how to get the most out of your presence at a trade show.

You can't turn the TV on at the moment without hearing yet more doom and gloom stories about the UK economy plunging into a recession and the dire state of a wide range of industries. As the ‘credit crunch' spirals downwards, budgets in all areas are being trimmed and often the marketing budget is the first to get cut, and with this goes exhibition budgets.

But should this really be the case? Yes it will give you more resources elsewhere in the business but it can be a good idea to invest more and ride out the economic downturn. To survive it's vital to continue to promote your brand, even when times are tough.

A well thought out and well executed marketing campaign is essential for a successful business, whatever the economic climate. It can be all too easy to just send out mass emails and rarely talk to clients over the phone, let alone meet them face to face. While e-marketing certainly has its place there really is no substitute for physically getting in front of people.

Trade exhibitions are a valuable opportunity to get together as an industry and chat to both new and existing customers as well as each other. It's your opportunity to put yourself across in the best possible light but in neutral territory. A well presented sales force surrounded by your products and services (the perfect sales aid!) will be successful in developing relationships and obtaining quality sales leads.

But just turning up at an exhibition is not enough. Careful planning is a must – your stand design and layout can make a huge difference. Your stand needs to be eye-catching and inviting, and being well positioned within the show is a huge advantage. Also make the most of any pre-show marketing and PR opportunities. Promote your presence at a show to all your contacts – of both existing customers and potential ones. Some people are cautious of inviting their customers to an event in case they should go off and talk to competitors but if it's a well known show they'll probably be there anyway so by inviting them to your stand you'll ensure that it's you they think of first.

Present yourself professionally and you'll have nothing to worry about. Get in touch with the exhibition organiser and see what opportunities there are to get involved – show newsletters, e-shots, show guides, the event's website and PR campaign. Get in touch with the PR manager and make sure you send them any press releases on what you're doing at the show; a preview of what you're doing at the show, new products and special offers are all newsworthy. And send your press releases out to all the industry press as well to maximize your chances of positive exposure in the run up to the event.

But don't just stop there. Think about how to promote yourself at the show as well. Press events, demonstrations, seminars and incentives are all a good way to draw people onto your stand and create a buzz. And make sure you have a press pack in the press office for all visiting journalists to pick up a copy. Don't just stuff a load of company literature into a folder as this is often of limited interest. Put together a selection of press releases telling the magazines about your company, your latest products and any plans for the future.

The saying goes ‘you've got to be in it to win it' and this is never more so than now when it comes to exhibiting at the right show. A good PR campaign coupled with taking a stand at a quality event can make a real impact and could be the difference between staying afloat or going under. It's never been more important to maintain good relationships and get in front of your audience.

CEDIA Expo 2009 will take place at ExCeL London from 22nd to 25th June 2009 (training: 22nd to 25th June; exhibition: 23rd to 25th June). It remains the only annual event in the UK for the trade dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems. Any exhibitor enquiries for space should be sent to Mary Whitlock at mary@cedia.co.uk.

Following the success of last year's Expo, CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) has announced that over 60% of floor space at the industry event of the year, CEDIA Expo 2009, is already taken.

The event, taking place at ExCeL London from 22nd to 25th June 2009 (training: 22nd to 25th June; exhibition: 23rd to 25th June), remains the only annual trade event in the UK, dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems. A number of bigger stands will be unveiled at this year's Expo, including those from Habitech, Kaleidescape and Spectral GB. In addition, established participants including AWE Europe, BMB Electronics, CSE, Crestron, Dynalite, KEF and JVC have all signed up for the 2009 event.

"During these challenging economic times it is a proven fact, that exhibiting is an important way of ensuring businesses ride out the recession and that their businesses remain front of mind for clients, especially when conditions begin to improve” says CEDIA Expo Show Director, Matt Nimmons. "With a presence at CEDIA Expo 2009, companies can be sure that they are promoting their business as stable and secure, and will emerge from the downturn stronger as a result. Six months out from the event, CEDIA is delighted to report that the industry is solidly behind the 2009 show”.

Mary Whitlock, CEDIA Sales, comments; "We are delighted to see the excitement building up around CEDIA Expo 2009. A number of big names have already signed up for what is shaping up to be another valuable experience for exhibitors and visitors alike. Manufacturers and distributors should never underestimate the value of getting face to face with both existing and potential customers – CEDIA Expo is the perfect way to do this. We're also launching a host of new initiatives that will add value to the show, and make attendance an even more productive experience for everyone”.

From modest beginnings in Harrogate in 1996, when just over 300 delegates attended, the CEDIA UK Expo has since grown into a major must-visit industry event, mixing the ideal combination of product launches, networking and education. The event provides a diverse and informative seminar programme for the industry, comprising CEDIA's own courses plus a comprehensive range of Trade Supplier Product Training sessions. The exhibition features the largest dedicated collection of custom installation innovations and technologies in Europe, with products on show from more than 120 companies.

Any exhibitor enquiries for space should be sent to Mary Whitlock at mary@cedia.co.uk. For further information on the event, visit www.cedia-expo.com.

NEW-LOOK EXPO 2009 EDUCATION PROGRAMME SET TO ADD VALUE FOR VISITORS AND EXHIBITORS

CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) is re-shaping the CEDIA Expo 2009 education programme to ensure the event provides even greater benefits to visitors and exhibitors.

Following a detailed review of the Expo 2008 education curriculum alongside survey feedback provided to the Association by delegates, visitors and exhibitors and continuing, year-on-year expansion of the CEDIA training schedule outside of Expo, CEDIA is introducing a number of significant changes for 2009.

The CEDIA 2009 education programme will continue to run for four days from 22nd-25th June inclusive. It will comprise a blend of one day workshops focused on specific industry issues, such as, HDMI distribution, alongside shorter sessions provided in a tighter 4 hour time slot from 10 AM until 2 PM on each of the show days 23rd-25th June. Programme content will be rationalised according to delegate demand, relevance and quality assessments.

The Keynote Speaker element of the programme which saw representatives from Apple, the BBC, BIDA and other influential organisations delivering presentations in the show floor theatre for the first time will be extended. CEDIA is also increasing opportunities for exhibitors to provide Trade Supplier training sessions which are free to all visitors. These modifications will result in a more focused programme, so education delegates can achieve the best possible return for their education investment whilst balancing their time more easily between training and the show floor.

"In line with the introduction of CEDIA Certification, the last eighteen months has seen an incredible growth in demand for year-round CEDIA Education” says Operations Director, Matt Nimmons. "Our new Training and Curriculum Guide details the extended range of CEDIA training opportunities now available to the industry which offer greater choice and flexibility to delegates than ever before.”

"The CEDIA Expo education programme is a key, though no longer an exclusive, component in this expanded schedule. A tighter Expo education programme will focus on the best, most valuable CEDIA courses, increase accessibility to popular, non-CEDIA led seminars and present greater opportunities for delegates to see the many innovations launched at the show and network with exhibitors”.

The full CEDIA Expo seminar programme will be launched in April 2009, with detailed information on all courses available in a dedicated Seminar Guide and on the CEDIA Expo website. Places will then be available to book on-line at www.cedia-expo.com.

CEDIA Expo 2008 attracted nearly 7,500 trade visitors. Now in its 13th year, this must-attend event is important for newcomers into the sector from the electrical, security and building contractor professions. It also provides a valuable insight into the sector, its integrated technologies and lifestyle benefits for housebuilders, architects, interior designers and building services consultants.
